Chatswood to Kick Off VIVA7s Centre

by Rugby Australia

Chatswood Junior Rugby Club will give the opportunity for more people to get involved with the new non-contact version of Rugby, VIVA7s when it kicks off its own VIVA7s Centre this Saturday afternoon at Beauchamp Park.

VIVA7s Coordinator at Chatswood Juniors, Jason Gay said the competition came out through wanting to give girls more opportunities to play.

“Chatswood is a club with 350 players but there are lots of siblings, in particular girls, who would be standing on the side lines of training and games throwing the ball around but they wouldn’t participate because they didn’t particularly like the contact.

“The idea at the beginning of the year was to try and find them something to do and VIVA7s just fit the bill perfectly.

“We did a bit of investigation into it and subsequently kicked that off and we have around 60 interested players.”

This is not the first time Chatswood has led the VIVA7s charge with the club having a side run out for the curtain raiser during the June Test series against England in Sydney.

“We kicked off at the right time to have a girls’ team form up for the curtain raiser for Wallabies against England”, Gay said to ARU Media.

“It was a great opportunity to take as the girls were jumping out of their skins and loved it. There were a lot of jealous brothers who hadn’t had the chance to run out onto the deck of Allianz stadium. It was great fun!”

The club has previously held come and try days to give a taste of what VIVA7s can be like.

“We held one in term two in May, to gauge the interest we could generate for the game, initially with a focus just on girls as our club is a vast majority of boys who want to play Rugby in its contact form.

“For term three our original planning was that it would only be for girls but we have had so much interest we have opened up to boys, mums and dads,  adults, uni students- whoever wants to come.”

The Centre kicks off at Beauchamp Park this Saturday at 3pm and will run for eight weeks with all welcome to come along and participate.

“The BBQ will be operating, the music will be going, it’s going to be a great day so come on down.”
