With only one week to go until the HSBC Volunteer of the Year program closes, now is the time to think about and formally recognise the outstanding efforts of club volunteers across the country.
Who in your club gives of their time week in, week out? Who’s the person that manages all the small things so you don’t have to?
Rightfully so, Hunter Sports High School, have nominated Will Scully who over the years has supported the game of rugby at multiple levels and forms.
Alongside his full time job as a teacher, Will has dedicated countless hours over many years.
He is widely recognised for developing the rugby 7’s program at Hunter Sports High School from the ground up, introducing countless students to the game and leaving a long-term imprint on school and club.
Will’s first coaching positioning was with the girls 7’s team excelling in his mentoring, strategy and set plays for the team.
His incredible work ethic and dedication to his team did not go unnoticed by NSW rugby 7’s, soon snapped up as state coach, alongside his local responsibilities.
Kate Gilberta former player at Newcastle University, recalls the hard work and countless hours the ‘super coach’ put into his teams.
“Scully doesn’t take his coaching job lightly. Most coaches get to training or the game and just put out the cones but Will puts hours and hours of thoughts into each play and different strategies. He genuinely cares about each one of his players and wants them to succeed so much that he puts our success at tournaments ahead of his own downtime”
Not only is Will the ‘super coach’, but he is also fills every other job on the team.
“Scully isn’t just our coach, he’s our team manager, water boy, orange cutter and bus driver – he’s done it all”.
Will’s selflessness and dedication inspires all that hear his story.

The HSBC Volunteer of the Year award recognises those who volunteer their time and make a significant contribution to community rugby across Australia.
Nominations close in one week, with the winner set to receive a $10,000 grant* from HSBC for their club.
The winner will also be awarded with a VIP experience at the prestigious John Eales Medal award ceremony, where they’ll meet some of Australia’s most respected rugby players.
